Opening of the Common Room We are proud to announce that on the 20th of October we celebrated the official opening of the Common Room. We have to thank for the Common Room to Leiden University and the Plexus administration, for all the help and support they gave us. Also, a big thanks goes to the first ISN-R board who initiated this Common Room project and fought for this place to become a reality. ISN-R and ISN-I (we are the 2 organizations sharing the Common Room) were happy to receive at this opening event many officials from Leiden University, among them Rector Magnificus. The event was a great success and we have to give a special thanks to Ms. Esther Deutekon for helping us organize everything and of course to Ms. Els Gips for preparing delicious surinamese appetizers! The food was excellent! For this special occasion, the Rector Magnificus gave us a special gift, a book about Leiden and its importance as a flagship for freedom of speech. You can find the book in the Common Room anytime. So just come and take a look! In conclusion, IT’S OFFICIAL! The Common Room is there for you anytime you need to relax, chat with someone, find out about events, activities and of course also if you need to complain about something or need some help. Academic year start 2009
This year the Academic Year will start on August 31, 2009 instead of the usual September 1.
Some courses will start on September 7, others will start on August 31.
In contrast to what has previously been stated, the courses of the Science Based business tracks will start on August 31, instead of September 7.
As there is a huge lack of English information within the university, we are proud to announce to you, our new reporte, Brunella , who will keep you updated on what`s going on within the University. Below are her articles: CULTURAL FESTIVAL CALLS. LEIDEN ANSWERS. Brunella Costagliola, Leiden Colourful, cheerful and lively. This was the mood and the atmosphere at the Cultural Festival that ISN-R organized last Sunday in Leiden. Despite the rain many people participated in the third edition of the Festival, grasping the unique occasion of sampling different cuisines from throughout the world. Students were giving the opportunity to set up booths representing their countries; they offered a taste of their cultures, such as typical gifts, food and drinks. It was very entertaining to go from drinking Sangria at the Spanish booth to tasting bruschette and tiramisù at the Italian one; from looking at matryoshkas at the Russian stand to sipping Venezuelan rum. It was amusing to watch and walk through the multi-coloured Indonesian, Pakistani and Hungarian stands. Moreover, there was the chance to get hair braided and a henna tattoo. At 18.00 the show started: on the stage many groups performed typical dances from several countries, such as the capoeira, a Brazilian dance, and hip hop. Very touching and warming was the welcome salute in different languages, form Korean to Sweden and English, given by the board members of the Cultural Festival Organization, who once again proved their ability to reunite so many people with different cultural backgrounds, setting a friendly mood and underlining the well-known saying, it`s a small world after all. Furthermore, the Festival provided an exceptional occasion for the Dutch and the international students at Leiden University to get together and have a good time. The Festival highlighted even more the key elements and believes that were the foundations of the Week of Diversity that took place last week. June 8, 2009 Student associations offered a rich programme of various activities, from lectures, debates, book presentations, to demonstration of Chinese martial arts, poetry and photo competitions, short film festival and theatre play. However, the participation at many lectures and debates was very poor; for example, the Flamenco workshop, by Kambiz Afshari, even if it was extremely entertaining and interesting, registered only three participants. The lecture on `World music and its precursors,` given by Dr. Joep Bor, equally amusing and fascinating, counted a small number of students. Nevertheless, the percentage of attendance raised greatly during evening events such as the Welcome Party at Etablissement Einstein organized by ISN-I Leiden; highly appreciated was also LI(s)FE (Leiden International short Film Experience), organized by ISN-R, during which a wide range of short films were shown and a theatre play, “The Dumb Waiter,” written in 1957 by Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter, was performed by the ISN-R Leiden Theatre Group. With the hope that the Week of Diversity will become an annual celebration and that international and Dutch students and staff will engage more in the activities that offer a unique opportunity to cultural exchanges, Leiden University has certainly fulfilled one the guiding principles that characterizes it: an international orientation. June 1, 2009 Are you an international student with many ideas and lots of energy to contribute to the international student life in We are currently looking for new board members. If you`re interested in a fun, exciting year, supporting your fellow students and making a difference within the University, check out the recruitment section of this website to find out how to apply.
